Dear SDS Learning Community,
Earlier this week I found myself in the stands with my boys watching our middle school girls’ volleyball team match up against Greenwood Christian. The next day, I watched our Varsity Girls’ Tennis team go head to head with Gaston Day. Later that night, in a Fall Ball league game, our high school boys defeated Dorman. Yesterday, our swim team beat out three other teams in their swim meet and our Varsity Girls Golf team beat JL Mann and Wade Hampton. It was a full and fulfilling week.
I mention this because all of these student athletes have invested in these experiences beyond the classroom, and our teacher-coaches have invested in these young people because athletics can provide a sense of camaraderie, a shared sense of purpose, a taste of leadership, an objective understanding of adversity, and clarity around the outcome of hard work. As we navigate these formative learning years for our students and work to prepare them for a life well lived, athletics – like academics and the arts – provides a rich platform for developing the habits that create that fruitful future.
As we continue to provide a superior educational experience here in Spartanburg I am excited for our students to continue to benefit from these opportunities.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Dave |
