ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
BECCA BARNET '05 - A "MAKER" ON NBC'S MAKING IT We hope you got to watch one of SDS's own, Becca Barnet, as a Maker on Season 3 of NBC's Making It this past summer. The best makers from around the country took on a series of handmade projects they had to complete in their own unique way. As the competition went on, the challenges became increasingly difficult, with one maker eliminated each week. The crafting competition culminated in a final craft-off between the last few makers, and was hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman . It was seen by over 20 million viewers.
Becca traveled to LA to be on the show, where she quarantined and followed strict COVID guidelines. Even with all the extra procedures, her experience was still amazing. Becca says about her time on the show: "For a modest crafting competition, 'Making It' was a huge production. We worked long hours and gave it our all to make some amazing artwork for the viewers at home! It was a dream to work alongside Nick, Amy and the super talented makers."
The show premiered on NBC on June 24, 2021, and ran for eight weeks.
Born in Spartanburg, Becca has called Charleston home since 2012. Becca's work is driven by a fascination with natural history and preservation. Becca transferred from Spartanburg High School to the Spartanburg Day School as a rising junior to experience a more arts-focused curriculum. Inspired and guided by Nancy Corbin, Becca took AP studio art and AP art history and focused all her study hall time on making her portfolio for art school applications.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration, she also attended the Missouri Taxidermy Institute where she fine-tuned her special knack and patience for taxidermy repair – from cleaning to complete mount renovations. She has worked for the American Museum of Natural History as well as the South Carolina Aquarium as an exhibit fabricator. She's put her precision and passion into Sisal Creative, a full service art studio offering interior design, museum design, illustration, and custom art installations.
